Introduction

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a branch of Artificial Intelligence that enables computers to understand, analyze, and generate human language. It combines Machine Learning, linguistics, and data processing techniques to allow machines to communicate with people more naturally. Human language is highly complex because it contains:

  • grammar
  • emotions
  • context
  • ambiguity
  • variations in meaning

For machines, understanding natural language is much more difficult than processing numbers or structured data. NLP helps bridge this gap by converting language into forms that computers can process and analyze. Today, NLP is widely used in:

  • virtual assistants
  • chatbots
  • search engines
  • translation systems
  • recommendation platforms Modern AI tools such as intelligent assistants and generative AI applications depend heavily on Natural Language Processing techniques. This chapter introduces the basic concepts of NLP and explains how machines process and analyze human language.

8.1 Text Processing Techniques

Before computers can understand language, textual information must be cleaned and converted into structured forms. Raw text often contains unnecessary symbols, repeated words, punctuation marks, and inconsistencies that reduce processing efficiency. Text Processing is the method of preparing textual data for analysis and Machine Learning applications. The main objective of text processing is to transform human language into meaningful and machine-readable formats.
