Edge Detection

Edge detection identifies object boundaries within images. Edges represent sudden changes in brightness or color and help systems recognize shapes and structures.

This technique is important in:

  • object recognition
  • medical imaging
  • autonomous navigation Edge detection helps simplify images while preserving important structural details.

Figure 9.2: Edge Detection Example

The figure demonstrates how edge detection highlights object boundaries and structural features within images.

Image Filtering

Image filters are used to enhance image quality or remove unwanted noise.

Some filters smooth images, while others sharpen details and improve visibility. Filtering techniques are important because poor-quality images may reduce Machine Learning performance. Modern Computer Vision systems often apply multiple filtering methods before analysis. Feature Extraction in Images Computer Vision systems identify important visual patterns called features. Features may include:

  • edges
  • textures
  • corners
  • shapes These features help AI models recognize objects and classify images more accurately. Deep learning systems can automatically learn image features directly from large datasets. Role of Image Processing in AI

Image processing plays a critical role in modern AI systems because visual data

is one of the most important forms of digital information today.

Applications such as:

  • medical diagnosis
  • surveillance systems
  • facial authentication
  • industrial inspection all depend on efficient image processing techniques. Without proper preprocessing and feature extraction, Computer Vision systems would struggle to analyze visual information accurately. As Artificial Intelligence continues evolving, image processing will remain a core component of intelligent visual systems.

9.2 Object Detection and Recognition

Object Detection and Recognition are among the most important tasks in Computer Vision. These techniques allow machines not only to identify objects within images but also to determine their locations. For example, a Computer Vision system may identify:

  • cars on a road
  • faces in a photograph
  • tumors in medical scans
  • products on store shelves Modern AI systems use deep learning models to recognize visual patterns with high accuracy.
