Importance of Statistics in Machine Learning

Statistics focuses on collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data. Since Machine Learning depends heavily on data analysis, statistical concepts are essential for building intelligent systems. Statistics helps Machine Learning models:

  • summarize data

  • identify trends

  • measure variation

  • evaluate relationships

  • estimate prediction accuracy Before training a machine learning model, data scientists often perform statistical analysis to understand the characteristics of the dataset. Statistical methods help answer important questions such as:

  • Is the data balanced?

  • Are there unusual values?

  • Which variables are important?

  • How strongly are variables related? Without statistical understanding, machine learning models may produce misleading or unreliable results. Mean, Median, and Mode Measures of central tendency help summarize data using representative values.
